CBD 101: Is there CBD Oil for Dogs?

Is there CBD oil for dogs? You may be taking CBD for your own health and wellness goals, but when you look at your pup, maybe you’re asking yourself if CBD could be helpful for them as well.

That’s when the questions come up: is CBD oil safe for dogs? Does it work in a similar way? How do you know how much to give your pet? How can you find the best CBD oil?

As CBD products become popular for both humans and their doggos, these are questions we hear all the time. So let’s explore the fundamentals of CBD 101: is there CBD oil for dogs?

Does CBD Have an Effect on Dogs?

This system is present in the brain, but there are receptors all over the body, like in the liver, GI tract, heart, and elsewhere.

CBD oil for pets interacts with the endocannabinoid system and adds to the naturally-occurring levels of cannabinoids in the body. This can help the endocannabinoid system maintain balance, leading to potential anti-anxiety or anti-inflammatory benefits.

Because dogs are mammals, they have an endocannabinoid system that can be affected by cannabis products.

Is CBD Safe for Dogs?

At this point in time, there still needs to be more research done on CBD use specifically with dogs. There isn’t 100% consensus among veterinarians that CBD oil is completely safe and harmless for pets.

However, while CBD oil may not be something to give your pet on a daily basis, it can be helpful in some specific situations (we’ll discuss more down below).

What is certain is that you should talk to your veterinarian before starting to give your dog a CBD product. It is especially important if your dog is on any prescribed medications. Some vets advise that CBD may interfere with the efficacy of certain meds, or the compounds may cause reactions that result in other side effects.

The decision of whether to give your dog CBD is completely up to you. However, it’s best to make a careful decision with the guidance of your veterinarian, and to start administering CBD oil conservatively to monitor its effects.

When Can I Give CBD Oil to My Dog?

A cute ass dog

A cute ass dogWe’ve all had that moment where we wished that our dog could talk—sometimes, you just want to know what’s going on behind those adorable eyes.

However, sometimes you can pretty much understand what your dog is going through just by observing their behavior. There are certain situations that generally cause anxiety or issues with many dogs. In these situations, some owners find CBD oil dog treats or tinctures as a tool to help give their dog a dose of calm.

Here are a few common situations where dog owners find CBD oil helpful in particular:

  • You are about to board a plane
  • There’s an event that makes the dog anxious, such as a fireworks show
  • The dog is going to be left alone for longer than usual
  • You have guests coming over, which tends to make your dog wound up
  • Your pet is suffering from chronic joint pain

In cases like these, CBD is a supplement that encourages some wellness benefits like anti-anxiety and anti-inflammation.

However, it is important to note that, just like for us humans, CBD oil is not a replacement for actual medical care. If your dog is in serious pain, or displaying symptoms that indicate a larger issue, they need medical attention from a vet.

How Do I Give CBD Oil to My Dog?

The most important rule for deciding how much CBD oil to give to your dog: start low, and ramp up the dosage slowly. Just like much of this CBD oil guidance, that rule holds true for humans as well, but it’s especially important for our furry companions.

The exact strength of the CBD needed will depend on your dog’s size and unique metabolism. As a general rule, you may want to start with no more than 1mg for every 10 pounds of your dog’s weight, until you figure out the best dose for them.

You will also want to space out your doses by two or three days to avoid your dog developing a tolerance to the compound. Just like how humans can develop a tolerance to CBD, dogs can as well. And while it takes a large dose of CBD to be toxic, it is best to play it safe by spacing out doses.

In addition, you want to administer doses conservatively. If you are using a tincture, use the dropper to monitor the exact dosage. If you choose to use CBD treats instead, don’t make these CBD treats your everyday choice to reward your pup.

When shopping for your CBD pet product, look at a company’s offerings. They should offer distinct concentrations that make it easy to dose just the right serving size for your pet.

Can I Give My Dog Other Cannabis Products?

A girl sitting with her dog

A girl sitting with her dogWhile CBD is not considered a toxic substance for dogs, the compound THC is widely considered by vets to be toxic for pets. THC is the psychoactive compound that occurs in cannabis plants, and it can have a tranquilizing effect on dogs (and cause other side effects like vomiting or urinary incontinence).

To avoid the impact of this psychoactive compound, CBD oil products generally contain a trace amount of less than 0.3% THC. Many products are specifically formulated for dogs with broad spectrum oil that contains 0% THC.

There are some full-spectrum CBD oils that still contain tiny amounts of THC, formulated specifically for dogs. These products are made with full-spectrum oil to encourage the “entourage effect” in your pet, delivering the CBD, THC, CBG, terpenes, and other compounds for enhanced therapeutic effects.

However, as always, it is important that you read the label carefully before giving a cannabis-based product to your pet to ensure you are not administering a CBD oil with high levels of THC.

What’s the Best CBD Oil for Dogs?

Our dogs always deserve the best we can give them (there will never be anyone else that excited to see you, every time you come back home!). So as you start to consider using CBD oil for your dog, keep a few things in mind to find the right vendor of pet CBD products.

First, make sure that the CBD oil contains nothing but simple, natural, and non-toxic ingredients. 100% organic CBD oil is the gold standard for quality CBD products. It may be a little bit more expensive to buy top-of-the-line products, but it’s worth it to spend on your pup. Dirt-cheap dog treats can contain questionable additives and chemicals.

Next, check out the lab results the company publishes on its website. Any reputable CBD vendor should publish the objective, third-party product tests so that you can see exactly what is in the product. If you cannot find these tests on a company’s website, consider finding a more trustworthy vendor.

Finally, check out the reviews of the company. Any dog owner buying a CBD oil pet product is probably doing the same research as you. Reading about their firsthand experience can help you understand what kind of product you are purchasing.
